New York, New York, U.S.A.: The Vanguard Press, 1969. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 1969 Vanguard Press 1st Edition/5th Printing of Oates's novel which won the 1970 National Book Award. It is ***SIGNED*** as "J C Oates" by the author on the title page. The book has a 3 mm diameter book club stamp on the lower right rear cover near the spine. Condition: The hardback is in Very Good condition with fraying along the top spine edge and 1" leading to the upper back cover edge. The original owner's inscribed name with the date June 1970 and Rockville, MD are on the FFEP. The book also has the classic yellow tint on the upper page edge. The DJ is also Very Good not price clipped. There are some small rips along the spine ends and along the bottom edge. There is very minor wear along ta very solid copy of an always scarce book.

Synopsis

Joyce Carol Oates is an American author born in 1938. Her novel, Them , was chosen as a National Book Award winner in 1970. The story is set in the turbulent ‘60’s and is Maureen Wendall’s struggle to survive and rise above the poverty and social straits into which she is born. She has been traumatized by her alcoholic father and also by her murderous younger brother. The reality of the families’ situation creeps up on them slowly and without realizing it, they find that a younger generation is exhibiting the same tendencies as the previous. A passionate storyteller, Oates depicts a family in peril and with fabulous perception, captivates the reader.
