[1915 ROBERTS COLLEGE CONSTANTINOPLE / LETTER TO THERON J. DAMON FROM THEODORE LYMAN WRIGHT, BELOIT COLLEGE; WORLD WAR I] THERON J. DAMON AT ROBERT COLLEGE, CONSTANTINOPLE, handwritten letter/ALSfrom Theodore Lyman Wright, Beloit College, dated April 19, 1915, with envelope with U. S. stamp and postmark and Middle Eastern / Turkey postal stampings, 5-1/2" x 8", about 110 words, letterhead "Beloit College, Beloit Wisconsin, Greek Department, Theodore Lyman Wright", writing mainly to express sympathy for Theron's loss of "your great good editor-friend, Mr Nelson", addresses Theron "Dear Brother Theron" as reference to some fraternal or educational organization they both belonged to, excerpts, "The beautiful photographs of the 'Shepard-boy' and the 'Muse' from the Constantinople Museum are in my sight…on the top of my bookcase…I don't know what the censors may allow me…nor how sure are the paths of the mail [reference to uncertain conditions from World War I]", on the front of the envelope Theron has written "May 17, 1915 - Received by me on return from the Dardanelles, May 30th" (different dates presumably referring to when Wright's letter was received at Robert College and when Theron himself received it); NOTES: THERON J. DAMON, 1883-1975, American who traveled extensively in the Middle East and held various positions including teacher, executive secretary of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Levant, and New York City dealer of Middle Eastern antiquities who also was a source of information for the U. S. government because of his travels and contacts in Turkey and throughout the Middle East especially during WWI and the years before WWII; THEODORE LYMAN WRIGHT, 1858-1926, Beloit College professor of Greek , translator of Greek dramas, and traveler and lecturer in Europe, Greece, and Turkey who had a close friendship with Theron based on mutual interests in Eastern Mediterranean classical art and cultures; PROVENANCE: letter is from a group of letters and related items from the Theron J. Damon estate ///// CONDITION: well-preserved, letter with two horizontal folds as mailed, handwriting fully legible.
