New York: A.O. Moore & Co., 1859. First edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good. Described by the author as "Historical Notices and General Plrinciples of the Art, Directions for Laying out Ground and Arranging Plantations, the description and cultivation of Hardy Trees, Decorative Accompanniments of the House and Grounds, the Formation of Pieces of Artificial Water, Flower Gardens, etc....with a supplement containing some remarks about country places, and the best metions of making them; also, an account of the newer deciduous and evergreen plants, lately introduced into cultivation, both hardy and half-hardy." Andrew Jackson Dowling is generally thought to be the founder of American landscape architecture, introucing the "natural style." THe original "Theory and Practice" was published in 1841. This edition with the Sargent supplement is the sixth of the original Dowling book.

Bound in embossed gree cloth, with slight wear at corners and edges of spine. Foxing on endpapers and title page. Previousers small bookplate inside front cover.
