About This Item

UK,slim 8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.[Translated by Gerard Hopkins.'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STANDARDS' etc.,etc,. advice/notification, and stated 'First published in 1947' to recto of title page.] VG.No owner inscrptn but green inked number 401 to ffe.Lightly aged+sunned edges - proximity of slightly smaller books as shelved.sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain cloth boards/covers with author's bright crisp, tooled, gilt initials within a gilt circle to front, lower corner, darkened spine/backstrip with bright, crisp, stamped author+title lettering, publisher's initials at foot of spine lightly oxidised, the rear board/cover plain and undecorated and white eps with lightly foxed verso+recto of both the front+rear eps. Generally clean with some minor discolouration through grubbing, and other imperfections commensurate with book's age; front lower edge with minor but small green dye/paint(?) flecks and negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks, tears, splits or any fraying present,Top edges slightly darkened through soiling and with sporadic foxing, slightly brighter but also affected with sporadic foxing; contents bright, tight, clean - text body virtually foxing free, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,slim 8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn,vpp+3-330pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,author foreword, stories: 'Therese Desqueyoux' comprising (XIII) 13 chapters,2 short stories,'Therese Chez le Doctor' (T and the Doctor) and Therese a l'Hotel' (T at the Hotel),a title separator page and preface for 'La fin de la Nuit'.(At the end of the Night.) comprising (XII) 12 chapters, plus [unpaginated] half-title - issued without free endpaper.
A very uncommon example - particularly of this 1st edn title - for a book of its age,and given it's period of production,i.e. 1940-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of cheap paper stock generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded. With war-time paper rationing and conservation of that and other materials, pulping was actively encouraged,so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing, opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced.Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster, exhibiting several faults, blemishes,foxing/spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition.
