A Very Good copy in yellow cloth with hanging lantern illustration to front board, which is lettered in black; lettered in gold at spine. Ball was considered the most capable and knowledgeable European speaker of Cantonese of his time. "Nearly forty years in China have given the Author many opportunities of observing and studying the chinese in almost every aspect of their life and character: and he as largely availed himself of his personal experience of them and of their curious habits and customs in the production of this book." - Preface.
