About This Item

New York: Macmillan. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1982. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Autograph; 372 pages; Clean and secure in original binding of burgundy cloth over tan boards in edgeworn dustjacket. Inscribed and Signed on the titlepage "To / Rowland Evans / with regards / from / John Hackett / 15 Sep 82" The Third World War: August 1985 was published and became an international bestseller Dramatic changes in the world scene since 1978, new developments in the technology of war, and important information from inside the Soviet Union have enabled General Hackett to provide an even more authoritative and vivid picture of what a Third World War could be like...The Third World War. The Untold Story, published in the year 1987, six months after the first book, makes use of much new material, including declassified NATO intelligence reports and information that has found its way to the West about how the war was planned in Moscow and experienced on the battlefield by Warsaw Pact forces. The result is a new history of the war, concentrating on unexplored episodes and fresh perspectives. The scope extends from Central America, where events nearly prevented the United States' critical involvement in the fighting in Europe, to the Kremlin in Moscow, where the book reveals how questions of war and peace were debated inside the Politburo; from the Far East, where China again invades Vietnam, to Ireland, which abandons its frail neutrality. The Soviet inspired encirclement of Egypt is broken open and Libya smashed. In Scandinavia, Norway fights desperately to repel the Soviet invasion, and Sweden comes in to fight on the Western side. Vivid accounts of the conflict at close quarters range from how an AWACS travelling at 25, 000 feet at over 500 mph is destroyed by Soviet Backfire bombers to the experiences in the land battle of Senior Lieutenant Andrei Nekrassov. Eyewitnesses in what was once the Soviet Union have contributed to the tale of the destruction of Minsk by nuclear attack and to accounts of the Moscow food riots. The new world that is now emerging is discussed at some length. This book is brilliantly written by General Hackett in collaboration with the outstanding team that worked on the previous book, with certain additions. Three important new advisers include: Vladimir Bukovsky, one of the most respected and best known Soviet dissidents; Viktor Suvorov former Red Army officer; and Lord Caradon, former Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Permanent United Kingdom Represemtative at the United Nations. General Sir John Hackett, GCB CBE DSO and Bar MC MA BLitt LLD, is known in Britain as the foremost soldier-scholar of his time. Australian born in 1910, General Hackett read both Greats and History at Oxford before joining a family cavalry regiment. The Second World War brought him three wounds and three decorations for gallantry, the last of both when he commanded one of the two parachute brigades at Arnhem, in a military career that saw him Deputy Chief of the General Staff and ended with his command of the Northern Army Group in NATO......"; Signed by Author .
