About This Item

New Directions, 1944. First edition, first printing. Bookplate of Samuel French Morse, light foxing to top edge, minimal crimping to spine tips, still fine in very near fine dust jacket with small black scuff to front cover edge, in mylar cover.. Tan paper boards, stamped in red. Merton wrote "Thirty Poems," his first published work three years after joining the Trappist Monastery of Gethesemani. Primarily and unsurprisingly comprising many of the Christian themes that would go on and define Merton's broader work, "Thirty Poems" introduces the world to the spiritual depth and heartfelt compassion that Merton exhibited toward a suffering world.

Very scarce in hardback. This was the personal copy of famed American poet, Samuel French Morse, as evidenced by the adherence of his personal bookplate to the ffep.
