About This Item

London: Charles Night and Co. (Printer: William Clowes), 1850. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. This is a very rare book, consisting of a single volume of the three-volume set originally published by Charles Night and Co in 1841, translated by Edward William Lane with copious notes. It has been re-bound professionally by the Clevedon Community Bookshop Co-operative Bindery Department, with a new spine, using the original front and rear boards. The original boards are green cloth, embossed, with a gilt motif on the front board, age-worn and slightly frayed around the edges, but in sound condition. The new spine in green cloth has a gilt hand-impressed title. New end-papers are green paper with a gilt pattern. It has a facsimile of the title page, hand-drawn in black and green ink. The 864 pages are profusely illustrated with hundreds of monochrome engravings by Landells, Jackson, Gray, Clint, O. Smith, T. Williams, Thompson and many others, from original designs by William Harvey. Prelims and end-pages are slightly foxed, but the remainder of the text is remarkably clean, with just the occasional foxing spot. Page edges are deckled (hand-cut) with minimal foxing. This edition is difficult to date, being so rare, but is probably circa 1850.

About Clevedon Community Bookshop

Clevedon Community Bookshop, co-operatively owned, opened on 31 December 2011 and now has a general stock of approximately 20,000 books. Our bookshop in Copse Road is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm. The co-operative comprises just over 600 members from around the world and was set up to stop the only second-hand bookshop in our town from closing. The benefit of being a member/shareholder is only social: no-one benefits financially. All profits are used to improve the bookshop and its stock, and, through events, to contribute to the literacy and literary profile of our town. The Bookshop Manager has fifteen years' experience in second-hand bookselling. Email us if you would like to join our co-operative and thus jointly own our bookshop with us.
