The covers are rubbed and quite soiled with some scratches to the rear cover and the spine is darkened. [viii] & 211 pages plus a 32 page publisher's catalog at the rear. The hinges and textblock are cracked with a couple of pulled signatures. The edges of a few pages are soiled. Good only. <p>First edition with the September 1889 catalogue bound in at the rear.

Three novellas making their first appearance in book form - the first from John Campbell, Marquis of Lorne, later Duke of Argyll (1845-1914); the second from Annie Hector Alexander (1825-1902), and the third - "The Melancholy Hussar" - from Thomas Hardy. The Hardy story originally appeared in "The Bristol Times and Mirror" earlier in 1890. Crown 8vo (20cm). [viii],(212),[iv]pp. Original pale blue cloth, ruled and lettered across upper cover and spine in black; covers lightly rubbed and very slightly marked; mild bubbling of cloth on upper cover; endpapers a little cracked; a little shaken and slack, but overall still a very good copy of an uncommon Hardy item. Contemporary (1896) ownership inscription of F. W. Wilkinson, and small late twentieth-century bookseller's label of the Hardy specialist, H. V. Day of Dorchester.

"The Melancholy Hussar" was originally printed in the "Bristol Times" and then syndicated with the "Newspaper Fiction Bureau," this is its first book appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. Original gray decorated cloth, soiled, rubbed, liquid stain to upper board,some water staining of endpapers and publisher's advertisements, 36 pages publisher's advertisements dated September 1889 at back. First edition of this collection. "The Melancholy Hussar" was originally printed in the "Bristol Times" and then syndicated with the "Newspaper Fiction Bureau," this is its first book appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on the blank: "Lady Seton- With one of the writers' love." Not in Hardy's hand, probably that of Mrs. Alexander although we have been able to locate any samples of her hand. Purdy p. 82
