About This Item
Boston: Little Brown and Co, 1909. Octavo. Frontispiece, 405 pages. Illustrated with photographic images. When Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 social protest novel Ramona appeared about the early days of Southern California, it was based upon extensive archival and ethnographic research. It became the first and most important novel on Southern California with rich descriptions of its locations that later led Carey McWilliams to describe how it created an industry. It was, however, George Wharton James description that became the best way to see the Ramona landmarks. Bound in green pictorial cloth lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, one lightly bumped corner, and head bumped, previous owner's inscription. A very nice clean copy.
