Most of the research for this novel was done in Vietnam during the winter of 1965. Parts of it were written at a Special Forces base on Black Virgin Mountain in Tay Ninh, a Vietnamese army regimental headquarters in Ben Cat, and in the Caravelle Hotel in Saigon, the Club Nautique in Nha Trang, and the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
