Birminghamae (Birmingham): Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville), 1772. 1st Edition . Very Good. 9.25 x 11.75 inches (23.5 x 29.5 cm). Full calf leather binding with new leather spine. Gilt panel and armorial to boards, gilt ruled board edges and turn-ins. Spine has four raised bands and gilt decoration to compartment. Marbled endpapers, marbled page edges. A few marks to boards. Two leaves have tears with expert old repairs, text is very clean throughout. Provenance: From the library of John Wilder, Fellow of Eton College and later Vice Provost. The book bears Wilder's arms to each board and a gift inscription from him the verso of front free endpaper, dated 1834. The first Baskerville edition of Lucretius' didactic poem 'On the Nature of Things'. A nice clean example. ESTC T50365. Overall condition is Very Good. Hardback. Printed pages: Large 4to. [2], 280

Book has been rebacked with new spine and endpapers. Printed in Latin. Volume 6. Translated by Thomas Creech. 2 pages of adverts to rear. Inscriptions to front pastedown and endpaper. Faint pen marks to top of title page. Pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, with moderate foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards are a little rub worn, slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are mildly crushed. Boards a little rubbed and marked overall. Boards are slightly bowed. Gilt is bright.

Glasgow: Foulis, 1749. (Glasguae, In Aedibus Academicis, Excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, M.DCC.XLIX). . Small 8vo. Full mottled calf, spine gilt, marbled end papers. Wear to corners and joints, still sound, very good and internally very clean. Pictorial bookplate of J. Coolidge on the front paper, and he has also signed the title page. In pen on a blank preliminary leaf is written: "once Samuel Cary's!"; another small ownership signature is beneath it. The first Foulis edition, 1749. The ad leaf is present at the rear. Gaskell 135.
