About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co. , 1858. Cloth. Good. 8" by 5". None. The fifth edition of this popular Victorian novel, Tom Brown's School Days. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. The fifth edition of the work, ninth thousand. An uncommon edition. The work follows the adventures and exploited of Tom Brown, during his time at Rugby School, the same school the author attended. Hughes popularised this form of children's fiction set at a boarding school. The work features a game of rugby, with the popularity of the work undoubtedly contributing the increasing popularity of the game at that time. Thomas Hughes was a laywer as well as an author, whose semi-autobiographical work 'Tom Brown's School Day' is by his most popular work. An early and uncommon edition of this important work of Victorian literature. Rebacked in blue cloth with the original backstrip laid down. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight rubbing and the odd mark to the boards. Newspaper clip tipped in to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot and marginal age toning. Good
