About This Item

New York: Collier Books, 1962. First Edition Thus. . Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. Vintage Paperback: Collier Books HS 46 -- This volume combines two short novella sequels to Twain's successful earlier novel, "Tom Sawyer." "Tom Sawyer Abroad," originally issued in 1894, is a parody of popular adventure stories of the day. Tom, with friends, Huck Finn and Jim "borrow" a hot air balloon from a mad professor and travel across the Atlantic Ocean to Africa where they see the pyramids and the sphinx while surviving lions, robbers and fleas. In "Tom Sawyer, Detective," Tom stays home in America in a humorous take-off of dime-mystery stories to solve a diamond robbery and the murder of "Jubiter Dunlap." This story was the basis for a 1938 film directed by Louis King and starring Billy Cook and Donald O'Connor. Mass Market Paperback, First Printing, First Collier Books Edition. About 4 1/4 x 7 inches, 224 pages including biographical note at back. Primarily white pictorial wrappers showing boy climbing aboard a balloon on the front cover. Original price of 65 cents in upper corner of front cover. A half-inch, tape-repaired tear on fold between front cover and spine at lower end of spine, o/w wrappers show only minimal superficial creasing at corners and light reading crease on spine. Tape remnants on inside front cover (whatever was attached is gone). Text is clean, unmarked and complete. No tears or dogears. Overall, a collectable copy of a somewhat scarce edition of these Twain stories.

Synopsis

Do you reckon Tom Sawyer was satisfied after all them adventures? I mean the adventures we had down the river, and the time we set the darky Jim free and Tom got shot in the leg. No, he wasn't. It only just p'isoned him for more. That was all the effect it had. You see, when we three came back up the river in glory, as you may say, from that long travel, and the village received us with a torchlight procession and speeches, and everybody hurrah'd and shouted, it made us heroes, and that was what Tom Sawyer had always been hankering to be.
