About This Item

[African American Literature] Morrison, Toni. A Mercy. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2008. Advance Reader's Edition, uncorrected proof. Precedes the first edition. Original softcover. 178 pages. Measures 5.5" x 9". Advance copies are privately produced and distributed by publishers in anticipation of the book release date. Back cover states anticipated publication date, price, and first run printing. A Mercy follows a European farmer in the late 17th century and his purchased wife and his household of indentured or enslaved white, Native American and African characters. The New York Times Book Review listed the novel in the "10 Best Books of 2008." Morrison examines the roots of racism going back to slavery's earliest days, providing glimpses of the various religious practices of the time, and showing the relationship between men and women in early America that often ended in female victimization. Cover is very bright with a portrait of Toni Morrison. Pages are clean and textblock is tight, in very good condition. Morrison is a Pulitzer Prize winning author, and in this novel, Morrison describes the progress of characters in Biblical cadences, examining race relations so by the end, the reader understands the significance of the title, A Mercy.
