London, 1793. Important Revolutionary War era map, showing the attacks on the Patriots during the Battle of Fort Washington, New York by Hessian mercenaries & British forces, and considered the best contemporary plan of the Battle. From Charles Stedman's "History of the American War" and based on a map by Claude Joseph Sauthier. Faden was an important English cartographer and Geographer to King George III; he produced all the British maps of the American Revolution, including maps of the individual colonies, theaters of war, and battle plans, which were highly prized in Britain for their accuracy. This important map of the lower Hudson River (North River) and the current day borough of Manhattan centers on the island from 'Haerlem' and Snake Hill in the south to Tetard's Hill and 'Spiking Devil' in the north. A key at the right lists four attacks on Fort Washington, lettered A through D, with the first, Hessian troops under General Knyphausen; and the second and fourth the British under Matthews, Cornwallis and Percy. Fort Washington is visible at the center, as well as 'Fort Lee or Fort Constitution' directly across the river; these were the two forts intended to protect the lower Hudson from the British. However, Fort Washington fell on November 16, 1776, in a decisive victory for the combined British (under General Howe) and Hessian (under the command of Wilhelm von Knyphausen) forces; the remaining American troops were forced to escape across the Hudson to Fort Lee, which they later fled. Copper engraved map with slight offsetting, a short closed diagonal tear at the left margin, and a very short split at top center fold. 10" x 18 1/4" with original folds, in very good condition.
