About This Item

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd, 1956. First edition published in Great Britain, 1956. Hardback. 252pp plus publisher's ads at rear. Green cloth boards with silver lettering to spine. Dustjacket. The career of Toscanini, from a story-book debut at the age of nineteen through 68 years of music-making, has been one of the most spectacular in the history of the art - and one of the most influential. In this comprehensive study, Dr marsh reviews the principal events of Toscanini's career, his relation to his public and the critics, his musicianship, his repertory, and his effect on artistic values. The book also lists all Toscanini recordings with full details of the date and place of each and a critical evaluation of the disk as a 'document in sound'. The appendix lists all the music Toscanini played in Britain and the United States during the final twenty-nine seasons of his career, together with the date and place of each performance. Book in very good condition. A little wear and some slight soiling to boards. Some tanning to endpapers and previous owner's name to ffep. Tint to upper edge of text block faded. Dust jacket in good condition. Unclipped. Generally rubbed and lightly soiled. Small closed tear to upper edge of front. Discoloured. Jacket in a protective sleeve.
