About This Item
A MONUMENTAL WORK OF SCHOLARSHIP
first edition folio 4 vols. (bound in 2) lii, 671; 755; 785; 639pp., contemporary vellum, sides with nesting panels formed by blind rules and a large decorative lozenge with strapwork and naturalistic designs blocked in the centre of each board, front joint of vol.1 cracked but firm and tight, else fine copy.
The magnum opus of two leading Italian philologists. Facciolati (1682-1769) was "the ornament of the Paduan university during a period of forty five years ... [but] in the compilation of this work the chief burden seems to have been borne by [his] pupil Forcellini [1688-1768], to whom, however, the lexicographer allows a very scanty measure of justice. Perhaps the best testimony to the learning and industry of the compiler is the well-known observation that the whole body of Latinity, if it were to perish, could be restored from this lexicon"' [Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edn.]. This vast lexicon has formed the basis of all similar works that have been published since. Forcellini devoted thirty-five years to its compilation but died before its completion and publication.
