About This Item

Paris: Editions de Minuit, 1943 Paper wraps, 12mo., 45pp. French text. Condition: Very Good. Mild dust-soiling to covers. Pages unopened. ** French booklet covering the infamous scuttling of the French navy fleet at Toulon, on 27th November 1942. This was done at the orders of Vichy France in order to prevent German forces from using the ships in their war effort. The vast majority of the fleet, 77 vessels in all, were destroyed. In was a difficult endeavor, with many of the ships being moored at the quayside, and so in relatively shallow water - in order to scuttle them, their hulls had to be blown open. The account narrated in this booklet was done soon after the event, and describes the viewpoints of various witnesses. With black and white plates, including photographs of battleship "Le Strasbourg" and cruiser "La Marseillaise", both of which were destroyed that day. ** The author, Yves Farge (1899-1953), was a prominent member of the French Resistance. He was appointed "commissaire de la République" (government minister) for the Rhone region by General Charles De Gaulle. OCLC 1269670.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.
