About This Item

London: Printed for the Author, Sold By J. Walter, Charing-Cross,. Fair with no dust jacket. 1791. First Edition. Hardcover. CONTENTS generally Good to Very Good, and COMPLETE - but the book is virtually disbound - this copy has both front and rear boards which are detached - but NO SPINE. Needs some TLC to restore it. The boards are full leather, with a gilt border, quite worn and scratched but likely contemporary to the book. Plain endpapers with a Library name and Number written in faded ink on the front pastedown. Title page has a little light browning and a few light marks but is overall clean. Top edge and page fore-edges are uniformly brown. Pages = (xl) + Large folded Map of 'The Empire of Morocco'. + 464 pp. The Map is lightly browned/patchy, edge grubby, has one small inner edge tear to the blank margin and is badly folded - as often found! . Page 1, Chapter One - the start of the Tour - is also very edge grubby/with a few small ink spots. Unsurprising really, as this first page comes after the large folded map which has made the book 'gap' at that point collecting centuries of dust! . The rest of the book from front to back is tight and clean, with an occasional foxing spot here and there, as expected with a book of this age. Sold as complete and ready for a light clean and a new spine..... After which you'll no doubt have a handsome and fascinating 1st Edition. ! "The author was a doctor in the English Army attached to the Garrison of Gibraltar in 1789, when Sidi Mahommed, Emperor of Morocco, sent a message requesting medical attention for his son. He treated the prince with great success, but complains of poor remuneration! . He was next summoned to Morocco to attend to some ladies of the Moorish sultan's harem, of which he provides a very interesting account. He also comments on the diseases of Morocco, the state of medical science, the ceremonies of the royal court, and the state of the Jews in Barbary, etc, etc..." . Images available on request.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
