A Tour through the Islands of Orkney and Schetland containing hints relative to their ancient modern and natural history collected in 1774 by George Low, Joseph Anderson - 1879

Kirkwall: William Peace & Son, 1879 A fair copy of the first published edition of Low's tour, which finally came to print over a hundred years after it was written. George Low was initially employed as a tutor living in Stromness, and became a minister in Birsay. He made extensive studies of Orkney, particularly the wildlife, history and customs, and made detailed notes and drawings in preparation for publication, which, sadly did not happen in his lifetime. His studies contributed to other works eg Dr Barry's History, and when the manuscripts were eventually published, his illustrations did not accompany them. This work was finally pulled together for publication by David Laing and Joseph Anderson, who supplied a lengthy introduction. This copy is in the original taupe cloth with black decoration to the front board, and gilt titles and design to the spine. It is shaken, with wear to the top and bottom of the spine, edges, corners and spine joints. There is a little marking to the front board. Contents, including frontispiece, folding map, 2 single page maps and 5 plates, are complete. There is occasional grubby marking.
