New York: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc, 1947. First US Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good+/Very Good+. George Salter. 8vo. Pp. 426. Red cloth, titles and decorations stamped in gilt on the spine, illustration stamped in blind on the cover, black topstain, fore-edge untrimmed: small spots to cover, owner initials in ink on the front endpaper. In the three-color Salter illustrated dust jacket, price clipped, light edge-wear, spine very slightly sunned. Canetti was born in Bulgaria to Spanish-Jewish parents. The "realistic parable" of a scholar, Die Blendung was first published in Vienna in 1935.
An especially handsome jacket design by George Salter, with calligraphic titles over a wall of book spines - the books that will eventually be consumed by fire in the novel's narrative. For reference to the dust jacket in the evolution of Salter's design, please see Classic Book Jackets The Design Legacy of George Salter by Thomas S. Hansen ("Salter's designs for Alfred Knopf are among his greatest accomplishments.") Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
