Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Beige coloured cloth covered boards with red coloured titles to the backstrip. The first novel of Jack Kerouac, using his more unfamiliar original name. A coming of age story, where the protagonist is grieving over the death of his father and gripped with the determination to write the great American novel. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges and there is fading to the top half of the back strip. Bumping, rubbing and some fraying of the book corners with the rest of the edges rubbed. The spine is somewhat cocked and the panel show patchy fading, stains and marks. Light tannig of the text block edges which also states shows staining. Offset tanning and foxing to the end pages with the pages themselves only slightly tanned. Previous owners name to the top edge of the free front end page. Sunning to the back strip. On the library table are Kelmscott works, including William Morris's The Glittering Plain and his 1895 translation of Beowulf. All the books are clearly bound in the distinctive Kelmscott full limp vellum tied with silk ribbons. The Wood Beyond the World is open to show a Morris-designed woodcut border and frontispiece. Leaning against the bookcase is a copy of the 1896 edition of Chaucer.
