About This Item

Bangkok: Orchid Press, 2002. The map consists of two views - the upper portion is that of the inner city of Lhasa (1:1220) and the lower portion provides a view of 'greater' Lhasa, including the Potala and adjacent village of Zhol, and to the west, Norbu Lingka, the Dalai Lama's summer residence (1:4572). The inner city plan identifies every building then extant, with legend in Tibetan script. A key in English is provided to locate major temples, offices and other landmarks shown in the lower view. A copy of this map was included as an insert in the publication 'Peter Aufschnaiter's Eight Years in Tibet' (ISBN 9789745240124). The original was created by Aufschnaiter during his years of sojourn in Tibet (1944-52), prior to the upheaval and destruction of the Cultural Revolution and subsequent Chinese influx. The map is now held in the Ethnological Museum, the University of Zurich. Facsimile reprint on 250g. art stock, folded to 20 x 16 cm.. Softbound. As New. 70 x 60 cm..
