1669 Cardiology Lower Tractatus Corde Blood Transfusion MEDICINE + 1ed Vieussens
Pairing of two rare medical texts from Richard Lower and Raymond Vieussens in one volume.
Richard Lower was an important 17th-century English physician who wrote one of the most influential treatises on blood transfusion and the functions of the heart and lungs. 'Tractatus de Corde' was one of the first works to describe the muscle fibers in the heart, blood coagulation in the heart, and the motion of digestive fluids in the body.
According to 'Printing and the Mind of Man',
"Lower's book contains an interesting account of the earliest attempts at blood transfusion…He thought of attempting to pass the blood of one animal into the veins of another, an experiment he successfully performed early in 1666… The experiment was imitated in Paris, Jean Denis transfused animal blood into the arm of a man… this last patient soon died and human transfusion was discontinued, though Lower never lost faith in its possible efficacy."
It first appeared in 1669 and only went through three editions over the next two years. An extremely rare medical text that was published by Elzevier. According to Willems, this 1671 edition was enlarged from the previous editions and included a new section on catarrhis.
Raymond Vieussens' 'Vasorum Corporis Humani Systema' was written in the early 18th-century and is considered a classic work of cardiology, even though not as influential as Lower's 'Tractatus'.
