About This Item
Hartford: American Publishing Co, 1894. First Edition; first state. In the very scarce publisher’s 3/4 morocco and marbled boards with a gilt-decorated spine; bookplate; minor rubbing; very good plus; in a cloth slipcase. Haycraft-Queen cornerstone; featuring the first fictional use of fingerprints. This novel successfully straddled two literary traditions. The recurrent (in the 19th century and earlier) theme of mistaken identity or mixed up birth (i.e. this author’s own earlier book The Prince and the Pauper) is resolved in this story by the very modern forensic science employing fingerprints.
