A Tramp Abroad by Twain, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens) - 1880

Hartford/London: American Publishing Company/Chatto & Windus, 1880. Usually considered to be a sequel to "Innocents Abroad," and is another massive undertaking. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition. Brown cloth binding, ruled, with decorative figure and titling in gilt on the front cover and spine. Clean text; xvi, 631 pages, with a one-page advert for "Innocents Abroad" on the last page. 328 illustrations by various artists "with also three or four pictures made by the author of this book, without outside help." This is the Second Issue, with one of the frontis illustrations labeled as "Titian's Moses." Contemporary signature on the FFEP; inscription in the same hand (1884) on the next endpaper. Bumped and rubbed at head and foot of spine. Floodmark on lower front cover that has also affected the frontis engraving of Twain. The main issue is a cracked front gutter. Although holding, this makes the book feel rather loose; Quercus suggests some minor reinforcement to preserve this classic of American literature.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
