About This Item
[i-xxi]; frontis ("Triumph over Death");1-[246]; errata leaf. Translated from "Traite de la verite de la religion chretienne contre les athees, epicuriens, payens, juifs, mahometans et autres infideles" (first published in Antwerp, 1581). Aldine anchor to title. Rebacked (& tipped) circa 1820 with trimming to page ends causing occasional loss to marginalia final letters (see image and/or request further detail). Glue residue to p. v; light impression to p. xi. We offer the following observations from Professor Jean-Paul Pittion author of Le Livre a la Renaissance (Brepols, 2014): "The use of the Aldine anchor, in place of typographical address is significant: the translation was intended for clandestine distribution (probably by Venetian booksellers, via Geneva). Such a work on the true marks of the visible Church would not have been welcomed in Catholic lands, given the reputation of Mornay, a leading Calvinist figure and well-known controversialist. The first edition of the Treatise was originally published by a Huguenot refugee printer in London, Vautrollier in 1578." [24], 243, [4], †8 ††4, A-Q4.
