Shanghai: the Author, 1921. Third edition revised. Hardcover. Good + overall. Carl Crow (1884 - 1945) an American newspaperman, author and traveler moved to Shanghai in 1911; he was one of the most successful Americans in the city, opening the first western advertising agency in Shanghai and founding the Shanghai Evening Post and Mercury.

Crow's Handbook was enormously popular; this edition includes the color folding maps of the main settlements or municipalities of Shanghai, the French, the "Chinese City" and the International Settlement. There is also a farge folding maps of China, Hong Kong and Peking. Crow lived in the city for a quarter of a century, a period which began with the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. He departed in 1937 as the city was being bombed by the Japanese.

Large 12mo, v, 314pp, Index [x] pp, 9 maps of which 6 are folding and printed with colour. Original green gilt cloth, title in English and Chinese in gilt at front cover; rear cover with yin yang device within gilt border, rubbed at extremes. All the early editions were printed in Shanghai China by the author.
