London: Chapman and Hall, 1847. First Edition. Hardback. Near Fine/No Jacket. First Edition London 1847. Original green cloth, blind-tooled with gilt design to upper and spine, gilt edged, very slight marking to lower cover. Both joints a little loosened but binding solid and there is no crackjng to cloth covers nor endpaper joints. Scarce this good in the original cloth.Note: initially began as a geological expedition, the book with considerable contribution from Xavier's wife, became a more ethnographic and sociological work on the people and institutions of Southern Russia and the neighbouring regions. Provenance: William F. St. Leger (Kingstown School prize bookplate to the front pastedown).
