Description:
London: Printed for C. Dilly, in the Poultry; H. Payne, in Pall-mall; and J. Phillips, in George-Yard, Lombard-Street, 1781. Third and best edition. Period tree calf boards, rebacked with modern sympathetic speckled calf. An expertly restored, fine copy in custom slipcase.. Illustrated with frontis portrait, two hand-colored folding maps, and five copper plate engravings, including four hand-colored.. Small quarto. 246pp, [index]. Collated and complete. Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution. Like his French predecessor -Verendrye- he was seeking a transcontinental waterway, but, aside from exploring some tributaries of the Mississippi, he made no substantial contributions to geographical knowledge; his book, however, stimulated curiosity concerning routes to the Pacific, later satisfied by Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark. - Howes, U.S. Iana. The popularity enjoyed by Carver's narrative, one of the earliest books on the Middle West, is unrivalled in the literature of early native American travel; thirty-two separate editions of the work are recorded. After the Seven Years' War, in which he served in five campaigns against the French, Carver set out from Boston in 1766 to explore the territory beyond the Mississippi and to find a north-west land passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On his 7,000 mile journey he travelled to Michilimackinac, then via Green Bay-Fox River up the Mississippi to Lake Superior, reaching further north-west than any other recorded traveller… Read More
