About This Item

New York: Avon Books, 1981 First Avon Printing, March 1981, an anthology of fantasy stories from 1924 to 1978, 588 pages. All of the greats seem to be here, Bradbury, Shirley Jackson, Harlan Ellison etc. and most of them were originally printed in pulp magazines, so finding some of them elsewhere could be harder. I read Shirley Jackson's One Ordinary Day, with Peanuts from The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, 1955, because the editors said that in their opinion it was her finest work, better than The Lottery. I'm not sure I agree, but it was a very good story. Then I noted my colleague pointed out that That Hellbound Train by Robert Bloch (who wrote Psycho) won the 1959 Hugo Award for best short story, so I read it. That was a really fine story, made me wonder if I wanted to sell the book! He says that Harlan Ellison's contribution, Jeffty is Five won the Nebula AND the Hugo in 1977 and 1978, so I think I'll have to read it before I let the book go if I can. Book is in Very Good condition, yellowing a bit from age. There is a price obliterated by black felt pen, price tag residue on the back, and Isuspect the ffep has been removed because the first page is the title page.
