About This Item

Piccadilly: I. Stockdale, 1812 Book. Illus. by Goodnight, Newton (et al). Good. Hardcover. New Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Original heavy grey paper boards backed (rebacked) in black leather. Original brown leather spine labels. Two-volume set. Patterned endpapers and marbled edges. Waterstaining to covers of both volumes. Volume II hinge cracked at title, with title page nearly separated. Otherwise solidly bound and holding together well. The author served in the Cavalry, Infantry, and Militia. This edition is an improvement over the first ( which was lacking in chronological order ) by being divided and arranged into chapters. 29 illustrations in Volume I. 22 illustrations in Volume II, by a number of engravers. Many cuts are full-page. Petards, infernals, and lead mallets are among the various weapons pictured and described in great detail. No writing seen except pencil note, "Grose's Military Antiquities, Vol. 1, Vol. 2" on prelim. of Volume II. Handsoil to covers and mild tanning to interior, with no effect on legibility. Volume I has 393 pp. Volume II has 367 pp., including several appendices and descriptions of the many supplementary plates, plus an index..
