Description:
West Norfolk, Connecticut: Self-published, 1898. Autobiography of Mary E. Beecher Snowe, born at Canaan Mountain near Norfolk, Connecticut in 1853, and who lived in West Norfolk, Connecticut at the time she wrote this brief booklet. Includes details of life in Litchfield County in the mid to late nineteenth century, including farming, the experience of having a home burnt to the ground (whereupon she was sent to her grandparents' in Goshen until the home was rebuilt), about travel to New Haven, marriage at age eighteen to live with her new husband's family, of hard work and little pleasure, of loss of a child, of illness, of a new war reminding one of the sorrows left by the Civil War. It is the story of a hard life, and the author makes no attempts to sugar-coat the facts as she sees them. Includes some original verse by the author. Mary Beecher, later Snowe, was most likely related to the Beecher family (Lyman Beecher, Henry Ward Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, etc.), who were originally…

Burlington House, London & Welbeck, Nottinghamshir: A. Ward for the author, 1779. First edition. With a folding engraved plate of insect pests, a folding engraved plan of a stove greenhouse (each with an un-numbered explanation), pp xviii, 186, extremely clean internally, full calf, a little worn and marked, with some abrasions leading to loss of surface, nevertheless still a good copy with presence. With the armorial bookplate on the front endpaper and the signature on the title page of Richard Cooper, one of the original subscribers. The rare first edition of a very important work. [The subscriber's list accounts for about 333 copies. It is a roll-call of the landed gentry and their gardeners, and shows the eagerness with which Speechly's expertise was desired in text. Blanche Henrey 1373 - "These works by Speechly were the most important on the culture of the pineapple and the vine published during the eighteenth century, and it may be said that they laid the foundation for the improvements which followed" . The pineapple had been grown for many decades in England, but it was Speechly, (1735 - 1819), who improved the design and structure of the houses. He discovered that the plants should not be kept at too hot a temperature in the winter and experimented with forcing pineapples in beds of oak leaves instead of the comparatively expensive and unpredictable tanner's bark. He worked for 34 years for the 3rd Duke of Portland at Welbeck Abbey in Northamptonshire.]. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good.

1819 Kingdom of Naples 1st ed Calabria Ulteriore Travels Voyages Girace Brigands"Occurrences During a Six Months' Residence in the Province of Calabria Ulteriore, in the Kingdom of Naples, in the Years 1809, 1810" by Lieut. Philip J. Elmhirst, offers a detailed account of the author's experiences and observations during his six-month stay in the Calabria Ulteriore province. Beginning with a harrowing shipwreck off Cape Stillo and the crew's subsequent detention by the local authorities, the narrative delves into the author's interactions with the inhabitants, the customs, and the landscape of the region. Elmhirst provides insights into the influence of French principles on the Roman Catholic-dominated populace, describes his travels across notable cities such as Girace and Casal-Nuovo, and sheds light on the dire state of regions affected by past earthquakes. A recurring theme is the oft-oppressive behavior of the French towards the local populace, from levying harsh contributions to the treatment… Read More
