William Heinemann, 1921. 1st Edition. Hardcover. VG+. 1st Edition, 2nd Issue (printed in Great Britain by Billing & Sons Ltd ). 13 x 19.5 cm blue cloth with gilt stamped titles to the front and spine. Black stamped vignette to the front and publisher's device to the rear, 302pp [10]publisher's adverts. Light marking to the boards, a touch of rubbing to the corners and spine tips and a little cockling to the front board. Internally there is no name inscription or bookplate and there are only occasional light marks and a touch of spotting on the edge of the text block. There is the usual uniform toning to the free endpapers and adjacent page, caused by acid migration from the glue used on the front pastedown. All in all a collectable 1st Edition copy of Maugham's second collection of short stories which includes 'Rain' which has been adapted adapted as a play, opera and on three occasions as a film.
