About This Item

1879 Jules Verne 1ed Tribulations of Chinaman CHINA Opium Extraordinary Voyages "In a very real sense, Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of the space age." ― Frank Borman, Daytona Beach Morning Journal, 1969. A rare first edition of Jules Verne's "Tribulations of a Chinaman in China". The first edition was published in 1879 and is part of Verne's famous "Extraordinary Voyages". This book is similar in style to 'Around the World in Eighty Days' but is known to be more humorous than his best-known novel. This book discusses, in a satirical view, the British trading opium in China and is filled with illustrations depicting adventures, shipwrecks, and sea battles. This first illustrated French edition was the first issue to include the 'JV – JH' initials on the front cover. Note that the 1879 first edition dating is found in the ads at the end, much like all early editions of Verne. Synopsis
