About This Item

New York: Farrar Starus and Young, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Shaw, Artie. THE TROUBLE WITH CINDERELLA. [An Outline of Identity]. Presentation Copy. New York: Farrar, Straus and Young, 1952. Inscribed. 8vo., 394pp. First Edition of Artie Shaw's iconic autobiography, "The Trouble With Cinderella." Gilt-stamped black cloth. A very good or better example in the extremely uncommon original dustwrapper that has a bit of neat archival restoration primarily at the extemities of the spine [some old clear tape on the verso]. Very neatly inscribed on the front free endpaper in blue-black fountain pen: "For Larry - Don't you see? That's the whole idea of the goddamn show! Sincerely, Artie Shaw, 1/14/53." Larry was Larry Lowenstein, a famous public relations persona of the early days of television & radio, & the author of "Famous People Who Knew Me." He represented such personalities as Arthur Godfrey, Dinah Shore, Joyce Brothers & others. "Shaw was a jazz clarinetist, composer & one of the greatest Big-Bandleaders of the 1940s. His song "Begin the Beguine " was wildly successful & became a symbol of the Swing era. He was the first white bandleader to hire a full-time black female singer when he hired Billie Holiday in 1938. Shaw was eccentric & intellectual, & had a tumultuous personal life which included eight marriages, including Ava Gardner, Evelyn Keyes & Lana Turner. A difficult man, he wrote this candid & witty autobiography, concluding that the trouble with Cinderella is that nobody ever lives happily ever after." A terrific copy in a custom TBCL gilt-labled slipcase in fine condition.
