About This Item

London: Printed for J Walthoe, D Midwinter, A Bettesworth and C Hitch et al , 1738 A fair 2 volume set in new quarter cloth with marbled boards, with 3 plates, 2 folding. Vol II is part of the set but has a different title: A Collection of Curious Travels and Voyages. Containing Dr Leonhart Rauwolf's Journey into the Eastern Countries .... The bindings are new and in fine clean condition with title labels to spines. Endpapers have been replaced. Page edges are reddened. Contents are complete. Contents Vol I: half title; title with ink note at the top; preface 2 pp; Text pp 1-428 with 3 plates Finis; title Catalogus Stirpium; preface pp 3-8; Catalogue pp 9-120 Finis. Vol II: half title with old ink note at the top; title; contents 8pp; text pp 1-338; half title; text 341-489 Finis; half title Stirpium Orientalium; text pp 1-44. Text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Vol I has old paper repairs mainly at the corners up to p 19 and some discolouration to the bottom corners up to circa p 99. There is a nibble to the top page edge pp 256-268 and some staining at the bottom edge pp 325-341. There is some mispagination: 369-374-375-372-373-370-371-376; and 383-380-381-378-379-384-385 - both with continuous text. The catalogue of plants is completely mispaginated between pp 33 and 48. All the pages are present - some printed out of order on the verso of others suggesting perhaps that this was an early copy. Apart from the odd mark or spot the text is very clean. Vol II has some browning and marking which particularly affects the side margins. P 1 has lost the top corner which affects the text on p 2 - a facsimile page has been bound in at that point for the reader. P 3 has a small hole in the margin and there are small repaired top page edge tears at pp 203, 260, 265 and 333. There is minor worming in the bottom margin of pp 179-192. There is minor mispagination: 374-537-376; and 392-339-394. Text is continuous.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
