About This Item

Hämeenlinna: Karisto, 1922. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good. Bull; René. A very scarce copy of the first Finnish-language edition of the title published in (English) in 1912 as The Arabian Nights - pictured by René Bull. The Finns have gone for the traditional "1001 Nights" title. An enduringly popular version in Finland which has been republished a dozen times or more over the years, the last time as recently as 1998. Original pictorial cloth gilt, coloured edges (salmon-pink), pp. 331, with 10 colour, tissue-guarded plates and numerous line-drawings, many full-page and all titled and indexed at the rear of the book. Bumped and rubbed at the corners, there are short tears to the cloth at the top and tail of the backstrip. Rubbing/fading to the titles both at the upper cover and backstrip. Minor lean and there is intermittent cracking throughout the block - nevertheless, structurally very sound, no loose leaves or plates. Remarkably clean internally, almost entirely free from foxing/spotting or fingermarking etc. Neat previous owner name/date (1925) to the top corner of the front endpaper. A superb clean copy of this fine example of Golden Age illustration.
