A very good copy with light wear along the edges.

Viktor Alexandrovich Nikolsky (1875, Moscow - 1934, Yalta) - Art Historian and Critic" - Viktor Alexandrovich Nikolsky made significant contributions as an art historian and critic. He was involved with the exhibition department of the Moscow newspaper "Russian Word" from 1916 to 1917, and penned articles about the "Union of Russian Artists" and "Moscow Salon", as well as on the works of S.T. Konenkov and O. Rodin. He authored monographs on V. I. Surikov (1910) and P. P. Konchalovsky (1936), and wrote "The History of Russian Art" (1915, reissued in 1923 with a foreword by P. P. Muratov). Nikolsky also worked for the State Academy of Artistic Sciences (GAKhN) and organized an exhibition in Monza, Milan (1927). His career took a downturn when he was arrested in 1928 and sentenced to three years in forced labor camps (ITL), followed by a six-year disqualification. He served his sentence in the Saratov ITL. Upon release, he returned to Moscow but reportedly faced restrictions in staying in the capital. Details about his later life remain elusive.

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov, a distinguished Russian painter born in 1848 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, gained fame for his historical paintings. His upbringing in a Cossack family deeply influenced his artwork. After moving to Moscow, Surikov honed his skills at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He is renowned for his grand historical paintings like "The Morning of the Streltsy Execution" and "Boyarina Morozova," acclaimed for their vivid and detailed depiction of pivotal Russian historical events. A key member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers), a collective of Russian realist artists, Surikov played a vital role in bringing art closer to the public. His contributions to Russian art are marked by his exceptional talent in bringing historical scenes to life, establishing him as a leading figure in Russian historical painting.
