About This Item

Pierpont Morgan Library, New York/ Oxford University Press, London, first edition, 1979. Cloth, leather spine-label, 4to, 32 cm,. xxvii, 338 pp, plates (7 in colour). An appealing catalogue of one hundred bookbindings from the Pierpont Morgan Library dating from the 5th to the 16th centuries and arranged chronologically to chart the development of styles and techniques. The catalogue includes four Coptic bindings of the fifth to tenth centuries, ten medieval treasure bindings of the early ninth to twelfth centuries and later leather bindings from the Middle East and Europe. Each entry is fully described and accompanied by a full-page illustration, with seven of the plates in colour ( a Coptic binding, four jewelled book covers, the odd Roman-French (?) tracery binding made for Henri II on the vellum MS. of Giovanni délia Casa's De potentium ac tenuium inter se officiis and a handsome Parisian Greek style binding made for Marcus Fugger). Three essays cover (1) the emergence of the codex and early Christian bindings, (2) the production of medieval ecclesiastical book covers fashioned from precious metals and enriched with gems, and (3) the development of early medieval leather bindings. Indexes: I. Binderies and Places of Binding II. Provenance: Patrons, Collectors, Owners III. Bookbindings before 1600 in the Morgan Library: A Preliminary List. Very Good in a used dustwrapper with a few minor tears.
