About This Item

Americana hopi Powell, John Wesley; Jesse Walter Fewkes; J. N. B. Hewitt. Twenty-first annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology: to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1899-1900. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1903, xl. 360 pages, 62 brightly colored plates of Hopi Katcinas plates (these are plates Number II to Plates Number LXIII. The Plate Number 1 is a folded map in the pocket at the back of the book. There are six black and white photos of chiefs of the Cayuga/Iroquoian nation, which are numbered as Plates LXIV to LXIX. All plates collated and present. The binding is in good shape overall, a little shaken. The are spots on the back cover (one on the spine). The cover is dull. This important work is in two parts: the first is the much sought-after study on the Hopi Katcinas. The study Hopi katchinas, drawn by native artists was written by Jesse Walter Fewkes. The latter part of the book is a work by J. N. B. Hewitt, Iroquoian cosmology. (Part I). This has also the phonetic transcription of the Indian texts (Onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk) to accompany the English. It is heart-breaking to contemplate how many of the Native American languages and cultures have been obliterated. All gone with the wind. $110.00 Box 5678
