First published appearance of Whitman's "A Twilight Song, for unknown buried soldiers, North and South," with attribution on page 27. (Later collected in Good Bye My Fancy, 1891) [BAL 21599]. Embossed green leatherette boards (original), gold-stamped: A Year of the Century, '90 on spine. Corners bumped, head and tail of spine mildly bent. Round-backed binding, toning to all edges, with interior pages fresh and bright. Yellow endpapers. This large volume has pulled apart at the pastedown and mull is beginning to show at the hinge. 960 pp. Small quarto, 7 x 10 inches tall. Also includes an issue devoted to California, Californiana, and many articles by the Sierra Club founder, John Muir, along with US Civil War analyses and other interesting items.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
