Description:
Small quarto, 2 pages, with a conjugate blank leaf. Thin strip of tissue-paper on the outside rear page, and minimal loss to this blank leaf near the centre of the hinge (both as a result of having been mounted in, then removed from, an album); light creases where folded in four for posting; in excellent condition. Humboldt writes to introduce the geologist Alexandre Brongniart, remembering with gratitude the assistance rendered by le Duc to himself and his friends and collaborators, [Louis Joseph] Gay-Lussac and [Christian Leopold von] Buch. He hopes that M. Brongniart, 'l'homme célèbre', who wishes to visit Vesuvius and the lava flows of Ischia, will be afforded similar kindnesses. Nicola Filomarino, duca della Torre and principe di Boiano, devoted much of his scientific career to the study of Vesuvius and the volcanology of Campania. Ayot St. Lawrence, 1948. One page, on quarto sheet of letterhead. ca. 100 words. Folded for mailing, small receipt date stamp, else very good. Half morocco folding clamshell box. Shaw, then in his 90s, writes his publishers about delays in production of BERNARD SHAW ON VIVISECTION, noting "I have been waiting so long for the dummy of this book you promised me that I have forgotten everything else about it, and beg for a proof as it now stands before I finally pass it for press." He stresses the need for the dummy to facilitate the design of the dust wrapper, giving details, and requesting either a dummy or specs be sent to Miss Theodora Winsten. He concludes by noting: "I must get this publication off my mind at once, or I shall be dead before it is finally disposed of ...." Signed "G. Bernard Shaw." The book finally appeared 23 June 1949. Winsten also executed the rather unpopular illustrations for the 1950 UK edition of BUOYANT BILLIONS.
