About This Item

New York: July 28, 1980., 1980.. Very good. - 103 words typed on a sheet of Theater Hall of Fame letterhead, approximately 11 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide, with the Hall of Fame's Uris Theater Building address & its logo printed in blue at the top and an alternative address for correspondence printed at the foot of the page. Dated July 28, 1980. Signed "Earl Blackwood" with "Chairman of the Executive Committee" typed below the signature. The letterhead is lightly bumped with some light creasing to the top edge & with the top left corner a bit darkened. Earl Blackwood's name is written in red and underlined below the printed address and one phrase of the letter is underlined in red. "Sent photo Aug." is penned in blue ink below the body of the letter. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.
Earl Blackwell writes to Mrs. [Madeline] Sherwood, widow of playwright Robert E. Sherwood: "Some wonderful news! The Theater Hall of Fame in the Uris Theater will soon have on its walls handsomely framed photographs of all the theatrical greats who have thus far been honored....Please select a favorite photograph of your late husband that you wish to be included in this historically important permanent collection....
Earl Blackwell came from southern gentry and mixed comfortably with the international jet set, using his social connections to raise money for the less fortunate, especially children in need. He became a promoter of celebrities and celebrity events and in 1939 founded Celebrity Service, which offered information and research, and published an International Celebrity Register. He was a director of the Broadway Foundation and, from 1957 to 1965, of the Mayor's Committee on Scholastic Achievement, which raised money for college scholarships. [Information from Blackwell's New York Times Obituary of March 4, 1995].
