About This Item
[London], 1954. One-page typed letter, signed "Yours sincerely, Rose Macaulay," approximately 5 1/2 x 7 inches; previous fold, else about fine. Author address pressure-stamped at top right-hand corner. A friendly note addressed to "Mrs Hay," who had evidently written Macaulay a fan letter after reading her book "Fabled Shore: from the Pyrenees to Portugal" (1949), an account of journeying through Spain and Portugal: "I liked so much to get your nice letter telling me of your time in Spain, and feel delighted that my 'Fabled Shore' was useful to you. I am glad you liked Vinaroz, and of course Tarragona is magnificent. I am sorry you could not get on to Sagunto too; you would find it fascinating. I am glad the little girls of Peniscola are being taught a little flatery [sic]; I hope the little boys too; when I was there, in '47, when there were very few tourists, the boys threw tomatos [sic]! Next time you should go in a car; one can see much more in that way...Yes, you should certainly go south, to Andalucia. Thank you so much for writing; I enjoy getting letters such as yours; it is so nice to know that what one has written has added to people's pleasure in travelling." Already an established author of travel narratives, Macaulay would later achieve literary fame after the publication of her best-selling novel "The Towers of Trebizond" (1956).
