About This Item
[Arizona--Utah] Typed Manuscript for Zane Grey's "Trails over the Glass Mountain" 1922
13-page typed manuscript (8.5 x 11 inches) with holograph corrections. Light toning to paper, especially page one. Minor edge wear and chipping and lightly creased corners. Last page has one-inch tear to left edge. Very Good Condition.
Typed manuscript for Zane Grey's article which appeared in the January 1924 issue of "Outdoor America" titled "Trails over the Glass Mountains". The manuscript title was amended in pencil to "Over Glass Mountain" but reverted to the original title at publication. Zane Grey made several trips (1913, 1922, 1923 and 1929) to the wilds of northern Arizona and southern Utah utilizing the services of famed scout and Indian trader John Wetherill. These explorations resulted in numerous articles and at least four published books including perhaps his best-known title, "Riders of the Purple Sage". Other titles include "The Heritage of the Dessert", "The Rainbow Trail", and "The Vanishing American".
A noted in the article title, this narrative is concerned with the pack trip's adventure over the treacherous "Glass Mountains". "The slope was steep and smooth, almost as polished as marble. Wetherill had cut nicks in the rock in the zigzag trail that led down...step by step, close together, we made the long-crooked descent without a single slip." Earlier Grey and his horse Stockings had a scare. "He (Stockings) slipped with all four feet and fell on his side. I held to the bridle, but I was suddenly paralyzed with fear for him. Stockings slid a yard or so, then luckily stopped on the last level of this bowl."
Utah State University holds several photo archives from these trips and provides an excellent re-cap of this 1922 trip: http://exhibits.lib.usu.edu/exhibits/show/zanegrey/themanymembers.
