Inscription of Abbot Dominic Fontanini (in Italian) to front fly describing the author's Monarchia Occidentalis series; two nicks in spine, else a fine copy.

Il contient 7 pp. de fac-similé reproduisant une description d'Athènes par un anonyme vers 1460 + 24 gravures h.t. et quelques dans le texte, sur bois, cuivre ou lithographiées, dont plusieurs repliées, avec une eau-forte originale de Ch. Méryon représentant le couvent des Capucines à Athènes, spécialement gravée pour cet ouvrage.

1697 1st ed Las Casas Spanish West Indies VOYAGES Cortez Conquistadors Torture

Bartolomé de las Casas was a 16th-century Spanish historian who published an important historical account of the discovery of West Indies by Spain. This book chronicled the first years of Spanish colonization in the New World; however, it did provide a view of the severe maltreatment of the local tribes in the Caribbean islands. He provides early information on Cuba, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and many other ports and islands. This work also provides details on the exploration and findings of Hernando Cortez!
This 1697 first French edition of 'The Discovery of the West Indies' was among the first books printed to expose the torture and oppression to Caribbean peoples. Casas was named as the Protector of the Indians for his role in seeking to end the cruelty.

Ruthlessly anti-Jesuit manuscript, possibly by Bernardo Tanucci: prime minister of Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The text summarizes the events involving the Jesuits in the years 1755-1759, from the controversy over the Paraguayan Missions to the trials for the assassination of Joseph I of Portugal. This autograph is not signed but clues to the identity of the author can be found in a rare 1759 published analysis of the contents of this manuscript, titled Sposizione letteral delle notizie anecdote giustificative della condotta de' MM. RR. PP. Gesuiti nel Paraguai, e nel Portogallo per aggiungere al loro manoscritto di Napoli (Barcelona [= Naples?], Antonio Michele CervelloĚ€). In the Introduction Byerley makes the connection between Napoleon and Machiavelli (" shewing the close analogy between the principles of Machiavelli and the actions of Buonaparte") [from title cont.]. A Fine copy, handsomely bound by a distinguished London binder. Oddly, OCLC lists the translator's name as John Scott Ripon, in contradiction to the title page"By J. Scott Byerley". .
