About This Item
Good. 4 ½" x 10" silver gel photograph. This photograph was likely taken during the WWI era. Rubber stamp on verso reads: "If not acceptable for use kindly return to the Hendee Mfg. Co. Springfield, Mass." Previous owner has written in blue pencil "U. S. Army Mis(?) - Motorcycles". Photograph has a 2" crease and a 1" tear at the bottom left corner, and light silvering. Overall good. This photograph depicts seven U. S. Army Signal Corp soldiers on Indian Motorcycles. The symbols for the Signal Corp and the Indian Motocycle Mfg. Co. can be seen on the side of each motorcycle. The Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company was originally founded under the name Hendee Manufacturing Company by George M. Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom. The name changed to the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company in 1923. We believe these motorcycles are the Indian Powerplus model which was purchased en mass by the U. S. Government at the beginning of WWI. .
