Niagara: [Printed at the "Mail" Office], 1859., 1859. 16mo. pp. 178, [2]incl. errata. original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked with most of spine mounted (some browning to title from news clipping mounted on previous blank). ownership entry of "James Elliott, Trafalgar, 1864". First Edition of Kirby’s first full-length work, a narrative poem on the settlement of Upper Canada by United Empire Loyalists. The work was completed in 1846 and submitted to Henry Rowsell of Toronto, who refused to publish what he viewed as an unprofitable book. Kirby eventually printed it at his own expense thirteen years later, with a dedication to Chief Justice Sir John Beverley Robinson, "in the hope that his humble tribute to the memory of the noble Patriarchs of Upper Canada, who, with this goodly land…have left us the still nobler inheritance of their patriotic and loyal example, may not be unacceptable to Canadian readers."
